Evolutions of SM

Evolutions of SM

From 1970 to 1975, the SM were only produced in a coupé version with a two-door body (12,920 units). And this, even if a production of 4 doors had been seriously considered (body plan studied by Chausson). The four-door SMs were only produced in very small quantities by coachbuilder Henri Chapron de Levallois (7 units). He also built 7 copies of a convertible called Mylord. Without forgetting the two convertible SMs made for the Presidency of the Republic.

From 1970 to 1972: the SM is marketed in a carburettor version: 2670 cm3, 170 hp and maximum speed of 220 km/h.

From 1972 to 1975: the SM was marketed in an electronic injection version (Bosch system): 2670 cm3, 178 hp and maximum speed of 228 km/h.

From 1971 to 1975: the SM was also marketed with an automatic gearbox. It was to meet the demand of the American market which was then the third for the SM (just behind Italy). The SM was offered with an automatic gearbox option from October 1971. It was an original Borg-Warner three-speed automatic gearbox first fitted with the 2670 cc engine of the carburettor SMs. Depending on the ratios of this box, the maximum speed barely approaches 200km/h. To remedy this drawback, it was decided to combine the automatic gearbox with a larger displacement engine (2,965 cm3), still powered by three Weber carburettors. This engine has a power of 180 hp. This version, initially reserved for the American market, was offered in Europe from October 1972.
