Initially planned as a three-box version of the 205, the future 309 is finally erected as a full-fledged model to complete the Peugeot range. It keeps the doors it shares with the 205 but is equipped with a large rear hatch of original design. The model was produced at the Poissy and Ryton industrial sites resulting from the takeover of Chrysler Europe in 1978. Initially planned to succeed the Talbot Horizon under the name of Talbot Arizona, it was chosen to be called the Peugeot 309.
