Peugeot 204

Peugeot moves upmarket, its image is assured but, in doing so, it cuts itself off from the market for small cars, which are more accessible to the greatest number.

While there was no need for it, Peugeot dared to study the 204. First of all, a market study, in order to position itself correctly in this new segment, with a good quality-price ratio.

Then came the technical study: Peugeot switched to front-wheel drive and installed a transversely placed engine block to save space. Moreover, it is lighter since it is partly made of die-cast aluminum.

Other innovations: the car is equipped with disc brakes and independent wheel suspensions. The 204 will also be equipped with a diesel engine.

Peugeot offers the vehicle in station wagon, coupé and cabriolet versions. The success is undeniable, the 204 is taken as an example by the competition. For the first time, it becomes the best-selling car in France.
