The DIRAVI (Direction à Rappel asserVI) of the SM: an innovative direction
This rack and pinion steering with hydraulic assistance is one of the innovations of the SM.
It remains gentle in the parking lot and at moderate speeds (city driving).
Assistance is total because, even when stationary, the effort required to turn the wheels is negligible and they return to a straight line of their own accord when all action on the steering wheel is stopped.
With speed it hardens; this thanks to the action of a hydraulic centrifugal regulator mounted at the end of the gearbox determining a pressure proportional to the speed of the vehicle.
This gives the SM remarkable directional stability even on slopes, in side winds and on wet roads.
At the wheel, it gives the impression of being guided by a rail and you feel it all the more the faster the car is going!

Steering column in two parts with double gimbal.
